Inflation: the minimum wage could rise by 2% from July

If you are one of the more than 2 million French minimum wage workers, you could receive good news this summer. According to the INSEE economic report published on March 24, 2026, inflation could reach 2.1 % in May 2026. A threshold which, if crossed, automatically triggers an increase in the minimum wage, without the government having to intervene.

To understand this mechanism, let’s recall how the minimum wage works. This is revalued every January 1 according to a legal formula, so that it does not completely separate from other salaries and remains linked to the real inflation of the most modest. The calculation therefore combines these two criteria: the evolution of consumer prices for the lowest 20% of householdsand the half of the gain in purchasing power observed on the salaries of workers and employees.

But the law also provides for an automatic revaluation during the year if the inflation of these low-income households exceeds 2% compared to the last statement which served as a basis. And this is the scenario that is emerging.

INSEE identifies July 2026 as the most likely date for this revaluationprovided that May data confirms that the 2% threshold has been exceeded. Nothing is official yet: we will have to wait for the publication of May inflation figures by INSEE, which should arrive in June, for a decree to possibly be issued.

Why is inflation starting again?

Right now, the cause of inflation is geopolitical. The surge in oil prices, linked to the conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, clearly had repercussions in France at the start of the year. Prices at the pump have exploded. At the start of April, SP95-E10 crossed the 2 euros per liter mark, while diesel exceeded 2.28 euros on average.

Thus, INSEE is counting on a peak of inflation at 2.1% in May 2026before a possible decline to 1.9% in June. Enough to recall the period between October 2021 and May 2023, where the automatic mechanism was triggered four times: in October 2021, May 2022, August 2022 and May 2023, for increases ranging from 2% to 2.65% each time.

Increase in the minimum wage: how much more on the pay slip?

If the 2% increase is confirmed, SMIC employees would gain approximately 29 euros net per month. Indeed, with a current net minimum wage of 1,443.11 euros, this increase would bring the net minimum wage to almost 1,472 euros for full time. Added to this is the activity bonus, paid by the CAF under resource conditions: a single person on the minimum wage can receive between 175 and 251 euros per month.

This increase is not negligible, but for some unions, it will only be a catch-up. From on January 1, 2026, the minimum wage had only increased by 1.18%, or an additional 21.23 euros gross per month, an increase which was considered insufficient by several unions in view of the increase in the cost of living.
