In Shanghai, the Zijin City Gold Mall is not really a classic jewelry store. Located in the entirely reconstructed Chinese “old city”, the building, built in 2015, has five floors… all dedicated to gold. At the entrance, two traditional lion statues covered in gold symbolically protect the place. The ground floor, dedicated to famous brands like Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook, is relatively quiet on this Wednesday, September 4.
But on the top floor, where there are 100 small private jewelers, there is a buzz. At booth number 669, which enjoys great popularity on the local Instagram, about twenty customers crowd around the plexiglass counters to examine the merchandise. From the phoenix to the dragon, the hundreds of jewels represent Chinese astrology to infinity.
