It allows the brain to age slower.

At all ages and even more when we get older, olive oil is a real treasure for health. Rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and powerful antioxidants such as polyphenols, it plays a crucial role in cardiovascular protection and reduction in inflammation. But that’s not all: a vast recent study, conducted by researchers from the Harvard nutrition department even suggest that it can help slow the cognitive decline and reduce the risk of death related to dementia, making a precious ally for healthy aging. Yes, but provided you consume the right amount every day.

To determine the optimal quantity of olive oil to eat per day, the researchers followed more than 92,000 participants (65% were women on average 57 years) for 28 years. Every 4 years, their olive oil consumption has been assessed using a questionnaire. The researchers noticed that from a certain quantity, the risk of dying due to dementia was reduced by 28% compared to never or rarely consuming olive oil. And this, whatever the quality of the food.

According to the study published in Jama Network Open, it is from 7 grams per day of olive oil, about half a tablespoon, that benefits on dementia mortality are observed. To consume preferentially raw, as a seasoning on salads, vegetables, cold or hot soups (added just before serving), or in a net on bread, pasta or fish after cooking. Cooking at high temperature can degrade part of its precious polyphenols.

To choose the best olive oil for health, always favor extra virgin olive oil, ideally from the first cold pressure and from a recent harvest, in order to guarantee a maximum content of beneficial polyphenols and antioxidants.
