Almost a million displaced people, there were around 700 thousand on 8 October. Over two thousand dead and over ten thousand injured. The data coming from Lebanon after Israel broke the blue line and invaded the country continues to increase. Not only Southern Lebanon, but the entire state is involved. Beirut, the capital, was also hit several times. At least 94 healthcare workers and 5 civil protection workers were killed in the line of duty.
Caritas Lebanon immediately mobilized. “Operators and volunteers are intensifying their efforts to assist more and more displaced people, without forgetting those who have remained in their homes by choice or because they cannot escape”, they say from the Land of the Cedars.
Caritas Lebanon intervenes above all in healthcare, providing medical care, diagnostic visits and medicines. Then in the protection of the most vulnerable people, for example giving psychological support to children and traumatized people, social orientation, protection to victims of gender violence. Finally, with the distribution of basic necessities at community reception centers and to families in independent accommodation.
Up until 13 October, according to the latest data, Caritas Lebanon operators and volunteers were able to assist almost one hundred thousand displaced people (99,302), who, according to Lebanon, «received the following services: more than 550,000 hot meals, more than 123,000 food baskets (sandwich, fruit and water), 4,694 long-life food kits, 2,755 personal hygiene kits, 7,629 blankets, 7,477 mattresses and 6,352 items of clothing; medical care for more than 8,064 people; psychosocial animation activities for children in more than 50 reception centers throughout the country”.
Italian Caritas supports the activities of its Lebanese counterparts with various contributions. In addition to sending an initial contribution of 100 thousand euros, it is providing technical and training support to the young volunteers of Caritas Lebanon, who have intervened since the first days of the emergency on behalf of the displaced and the many families left isolated.
However, financial resources are scarce. This is why Italian Caritas renews its appeal for donations.
