If a certainty comes out of the Marche polls, it is the blow of the candidate of the Democratic Party Matteo Ricci: eight points under the center -right of the winner reconfirmation Francesco Acquaroli, without appeal. In a week it will be up to Calabria, dangerous and treacherous land, and in the meantime in Veneto, in the fiefdom – no longer kingdom, but little changes – by Luca Zaia, the center -left does not even try to climb the mountain. Therefore, to straighten the accounts, Tuscany, Campania and Puglia remain: historically red or rosely regions, but not armored. Winning there may seem likely, but nothing is obvious.
Nobody asks, at least for now, Elly Schlein’s head. But the stomach ache grows. The alliance with the 5 Star Movement, renamed with cynicism “Camposanto” instead of “wide field”, proves to be a sprouted weapon: thirteen defeats on sixteen in the territories in which she was tested. And not even the idea of unity dear to Stefano Bonaccini works more: judged soft, ineffective, already considered overcome. So what? The answer is postponed to the Milan conference, at the end of October, when the results of Calabria and Tuscany will also be clear. Dario Franceschini, old Christian Democrat and tactic teacher, says it openly: the majority vocation of the Democratic Party is dead and buried, a system of alliances is needed. But with whom? With what conditions? Questions that remain unanswered. In the meantime, the Democratic Party drags the oldest problem: that of the center. The ex margherita component, the democratic Catholics who once guaranteed social roots, has been relegated to the margins. It no longer touches the ball, and this has a price. Schlein concentrates her message on civil rights and identity issues, very welcome to the five stars and a part of the urban left, but not very understandable – and even annoying – for the moderate electorate or for the abstained basin, which are a legion and that no one manages to recover anymore.
In fact, people are interested in health, work, school. Everything related to concrete life. But the Democratic Party, taken by its internal diatribes and ideological flags, does not always manage to make her voice heard on these themes. So it ends up seeming a party that speaks to itself. Here is the real knot. Born as a party with a majority vocation, heir of two cultures-the post-communist and the Catholic-democratic one-today appears prisoner of a leadership that favors only one half of his DNA. The democratic Catholics, which once guaranteed the link with territories, parishes, associations, cooperatives, were put on the corner. And without them, the Democratic Party loses that link with the real country which was its strength. To take advantage of it is the party of the Meloni sisters, who continues to navigate with the wind in the stern. Next appointment in Calabria, in a few days, exactly Sunday 5 and Monday 6 October.
