Mathilde of Belgium has a lot to do on a daily basis as queen. But the sovereign also has a much more personal passion, which few suspect. A hobby that has accompanied her for years and that she has naturally passed on to her children…
The Belgian royal family is talented. Its members are all music lovers and know how to play an instrument… and Queen Mathilde is no exception to the rule!
Mathilde of Belgium: her unsuspected passion that she passed on to her children
Music softens morals and it is not the sovereigns of Belgium and their children who will say the opposite! The fourth art is particularly appreciated within the royal family. King Philippe learned the piano around ten years earlier and continues to practice it regularly today.
In an interview with the RTBFhe even specified that he played this instrument every morning after reading his newspaper, in order to start his day off right. But the king of the flat country still has one regret: that of never having learned to play the guitar. “If I ever live again and am reincarnated, I will learn to play the guitar” he said.
As for his wife, Mathilde of Belgium, she had already decided to start learning the piano just after their marriage, in 1999. She is also honorary president of the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Musical Competition and of the King Baudouin Foundation. “To play an instrument, you need a certain structure, a certain perseverance over time. Because playing an instrument can’t be learned overnight.”she explained to RTBF.
A passion for music that the Queen wanted to pass on to her children. Princess Elisabeth, 24, started playing the piano when she was 6 years old. Her little sister, Eléonore, 17, is a fan of the violin and had also played a piece in front of her father for his birthday, when she was only 9 years old.
Mathilde of Belgium: her son became a DJ
Prince Gabriel, 22, also plays the piano and has even developed an appetite for Techno music, just like his younger brother, Emmanuel, 20, who even launched into the world of music, as a DJ, under the pseudonym Vyntrix. Its title Palace was also broadcast during the National Day, on July 21, under the proud gaze of his parents.
Before embarking on Electro music, Prince Emmanuel started with the saxophone, which he has played since his childhood. Today, he continues to play music every day. “Luckily we live in a spacious house“, said Queen Mathilde with humor, despite everything delighted to have been able to pass on her love of music to her family.
