“Milan must resume the culture of coexistence in hand”, exclaims Marco Garzonio when we ask him how Milan can overcome the new judicial storm that has invested it. Garzonio, journalist and psychologist analyst, emeritus president of the Ambrosianeum Cultural Foundation, historical signature of Corriere della Serabiographer of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, in 2021 he wrote a book, published by Edizioni San Paolo, entitled: “The city that goes up”with a title borrowed from the homonymous painting by the futurist painter Umberto Boccioni.
“That book were inside all the things we are talking about in these days,” says Garzonio, who recalls today “Milan that begins to scratch just inaugurated the Expo” in 2015, the “Gentile mayor” Giuliano Pisapia That in 2017 he decided not to re -stand, the “sparkling Milan” (words of the mayor Sala) of the after Expo and “Milan that retires, which cannot resist this wave”.
Garzonio underlines that the “sparkling Milan” is not only that of urban planning, but also “the one that in via Montenapoleone or in via della Spiga puts the bags and designer jackets produced not in Bangladesh or China for 3 thousand euros and jackets, but with leased triulzi, as I told in my book The double look“.
What is the Milan that retires compared to Milan intoxicated by the brick, by large urban projects and skyscrapers?
“It is the popular Milan, environmentalist, of the left, Catholic, Caritas, parishes, summer speakers, of the parish San Vincenzo who pay for rents and make the packs of food, go to find families, know what their needs are”, Garzonio replies.
“It is the Milan of the workers who no longer have a voice”, continues the writer, “the popular Milan that planted the curtains in the square because the students do not find a home. By now in Milan the beds rented, not even the rooms. Here are less Homeless Compared to the cities of the United States, but there are families who do not arrive at the end of the month. Today now who speaks of welcome in Milan? They tell me that if they can, immigrants also avoid Milan. Here the frequencies of public transport decreases because the ATM finds no drivers. They come from the south, participate in competitions and maybe after six months they leave because the houses cost too much. They do not find a house even in the immediate surroundings of the city “.
So how do you come out? “It comes out having the courage to rethink this model of the city. It is a rethinking that has to involve the Church, the media and the publishing (which in Milan still have a weight), the cultural world. We must invest in libraries, in universities, in the after -school. It is necessary to bring people back to the center. The skyscraper is the top of an iceberg that has overwhelmed everyone. Now Milan is full of hotels. Does it favor the work of bars and restaurants, but are they the main structure of a city?
