And if our illness of the century was not (only) stress, anxiety or mental overload, but an even deeper symptom: immobility? In The power of movementSébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang invite us to rethink our relationship to the body in a society where sedentary lifestyle has become the norm. Consultants, trainers and practitioners in bioenergy, they make a final diagnosis: no longer moving, it is to disconnect from oneself, others, and impoverish our cognitive, emotional and relational capacities.

At a time when we are talking about well-being at work, soft skills and emotional intelligence, their bodily approach, radically innovative, puts the body at the center of business, health and relationships.

Meeting with two authors who move the lines … literally and figuratively.

How is the decline of movement the evil of our century and what are the consequences on the human being?

Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang: In our modern society, we spend more than six hours a day, in a sitting position, even without realizing it. This lack of movement impacts everything: our mental and physical health, our mood, our productivity …

The body becomes a constraint when it should be an engine. This decline creates stress, fatigue and desocialization. Moving is vital and unfortunately we all tend to forget it!

Most often, when we talk about the decline of movement, we think of the diseases it causes such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and musculoskeletal disorders. These are the visible symptoms of sedentary lifestyle but there is a even more insidious hidden side: no longer moving, it is disconnecting from yourself.

It is leaving the body aside, as if it were just a secondary tool.

However, movement is what connects us to our autonomous nervous system. It is through the movement that we feel that we regulate our emotions and that we secure internally.

When you no longer move, it is all self -awareness, emotional regulation and mental health that collapse.

No longer moving, it is not only to lose in physical shape, it is to lose in the presence of yourself and to others.

You talk about bioenergy therapy, can you explain its contours?

The power of the movement – Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang (Ed. Eyrolles)

Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang: It is an approach that connects the body and emotions. It assumes that our physical tensions are often the reflection of emotional blocking. By releasing these tensions by movement, we also relax what weighs us mentally. This can deeply change our relationship to stress, energy and connection with ourselves.

How can the culture of stoicism at work have negative effects and how to find the right balance?

Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang: Stoicism is useful in times of crisis, but on a daily basis, it can become armor. We hide our emotions, we cut ourselves from others. The real courage is not to pretend that everything is fine, it is to learn to channel these emotions in a constructive way. And that, the body can help us. To move is to express themselves differently.

Stoicism of positive that invites us to create daily routines, and reminds us that we cannot create a change without recreating routines.

We use this philosophical thought to initiate new bodily routines, in order to promote self -regulation and bring out synergic, productive and efficient collaborations.

Mottage of the body, physical exercise … also make it possible to improve our performance, our productivity, our creativity and our decision -making. You talk about ” new dynamic In the company, what can it be concretely?

Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang: We want to transform the working environment by putting the body back at the heart of the business. We want to recognize everyone’s individuality, that is to say the natural way of moving, thinking, making decisions or managing your emotions.

When we respect this, we gain in fluidity, performance and collaboration. We then have the possibility of creating collective rhythms and collaborative workspaces.

The new corporate dynamic is not to do more but to do better and together.

It is also to secure the working environment and secure all employees in order to optimize creativity, performance and especially collaboration.

How to improve team work in particular?

Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang: Once each employee has been profiled, individually, we make a coat of arms or badge, which reveals their motor preferences and identifies its soft skills in motion as in a sedentary position.

It also highlights its natural rhythms. This badge constitutes a dynamic identity card, both bodily and behavioral.

We also design a collective badge for the whole team. This ” team coat of arms »Allows us to approach the group as a single organism consistent with its own dynamics, strengths and tension zones.

This makes communication more anchored, more targeted, and allows everyone to understand the engine and cognitive operation of their colleagues.

Result: interactions gain in fluidity, cooperation becomes more natural and collective efficiency rises.

It’s a bit like a choreography: everyone remains unique, but we move forward together.

Are you talking about synchronization of individuals, what do you mean?

Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang: This is this moment when everyone is on the same wavelength!

Not fair in the head but also in his body. We move together, we stimulate our motor preferences together, we work better together. Synchronization was created from harmony, flow. And that changes everything in a team dynamic.

One of the other evils of the century is stress. What are the tools ” motors »That you recommend to better manage it?

Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang: Stress is above all a deregulation of the nervous system, autonomous. The fundamental objective of our action is therefore to bring back as often as possible, collaborators in the activation of the ventral vagal nerve, this key area or lies in safety, well-being and the ability to enter into contact with others.

Of course, the activation of the sympathetic system or the dorsal vagal, sometimes remains necessary according to the contexts.

But the key lies in fluidity: the ability to return spontaneously to ventral vagal. This is what we call flow.

The bodily actions that we offer are individualized. They allow through the body, to activate the autonomous nervous system to promote this dynamic of regulation. By finding this flow, everyone becomes more able to face a stressful environment, without undergoing it.

It is no longer a question of imposing mental injunctions, unrealistic on a saturated brain, but on the contrary to speak to the body, in order to address directly to the autonomic nervous system, thanks to preferential motor stimuli.

This is where the rupture lies with conventional approaches: we restore the natural loop between bodies, security and performance. A radically new deeply human and highly effective approach.

What are your advice and routines to adopt for a productive day?

Sébastien Mary and Bruce Hoang: Two possibilities are available to you: either you have not been profiled, and in this case, you have to adopt generalist advice, breathe, walk, change your posture every hour, make standing meetings, use Swiss Ball, use adjustable high offices …

In the event that you have been profiled, we are able to generate body routines, fully individualized and built around your preferential operating mode. These routine are not generic: they are tailor-made to activate your own driving levers.

We teach you gestures, postures and specific physical stimulation combinations that allow you to anchor in your natural motor dynamics.

This return to your motor comfort zone, promotes the activation of ventral vagal, synonymous with interior safety, physiological stability and authentic connection to oneself.

By cultivating this link, you find your center, your fluidity and your ability to act with clarity in sometimes, unstable and stressful environments.
