Not always easy to choose the right colors for your walls! The decorator Aurélie Hemar, who has just created a range of 40 colors for paintings1825, entrusts us with some basic rules for a harmonious decor that marries colors well.

Aurélie Hemar: You can of course use several colors in the same room. You just have to dosage : the strong color can be either dominant or in keys. Another rule: it is always necessary Mix a cold shade with a slightly warmer shade. For example, a cold gray, that is to say slightly bluish, will have to be associated with a beige which has a hint of red in it. We will avoid a greenish and cold beige. Using that cold colors, the final atmosphere will be cold and soulless. On the contrary, a maximum of warm colors will give an too heavy side to the room. Mixing cold and hot shades is therefore the key to succeeding in a warm and harmonious decoration.
What are neutrals for?
The neutral breaks the color. The color energizes the room: it can be applied on a section of wall or in a passage where you can afford to have a total colorful look and create like a box (entrance, corridor, staircase). On the contrary, in the living room, the color used will be neutral and the color more sustained will just come as a reminder on the plinths, the doors or a section of wall.
How to wake up neutral shades, sometimes seen and reviewed, without repainting everything?
In a bedroom, if the walls are white or broken white, we will bring color by marking the headboard, the plinths or a gate of a stronger shade.
Is the combination of a primary color with a secondary color possible? For example, yellow with purple.
It can work. Afterwards, it all depends on purple: it must be cold and shoot rather towards the purple, with a touch of blue therefore. On the other hand, a purple that has too much red will be badly associated with yellow.
Yellow is a color very present in decoration for the spring-summer 2014 season. How to apply it to the wall?
Yellow will be used in touches: we are not going to repaint an entire room in this shade! Yellow can be effectively contrasting with slightly darker shades such as a bluish purple (lips purple shade of paintings1825), a deep black or a putty. It shows that Yellow is a bright color that can easily be used without obtaining an old -fashioned and cheesy side. It is then energized and modernized. Associated with black, you even get an ultra chic hotel atmosphere.
What do you think of black in decoration?
It’s my favorite color! I love the pieces in total black look. In one of my projects, the entrance was entirely black and the kitchen completely white, monochrome: the floor, the walls, the elements, everything was of the same white. And as the kitchen was visible from the entrance, it created a magnificent contrast.
What is the right color for the bedroom?
In this room dedicated to rest, we will avoid too hot colors, like red, which excite a little and are not ideal for sleeping. But I have already used Coral in a room, with black and brown tones in a fairly masculine atmosphere. For a more female room, we will use mauve and fuchsia tones.
