Switch to four days a week, slow down your activity before retirement or interrupt your career to take care of your family… These choices often respond to personal imperatives. But the same question comes up when taking stock of its retirement : what was or what will be the impact? The answer is less alarming than one might imagine. “Over 42 years of minimum contributions, often, it’s not huge”explains Violaine Wallet, retirement law consultant at Joconde Retraite. It all depends on the duration of the part-time, the level of remuneration preserved… and solutions put in place.

In end of careerthe most protective option, from age 60 and 150 quarters of contributions, remains the gradual retirement. Since September 2025, it allows, under conditions, to reduce your working hours while starting to receive part of your pension. Better yet, some companies agree to maintain contributions as if the employee worked full time. “this is obviously the ideal”, enthuses the expert. This overcontribution however, remains subject to the agreement of the employer. Before making a decision, it is therefore better to compare several scenarios, while keeping in mind that the projections remain dependent on future reforms.

Leave linked to births, leave without pay: not all leave is equal

Not all interruptions of activity have the same effects on retirement rights. Each birth gives the right to eight quarters of increase, including four linked to maternity and since 2010, two of the four education terms can be shared between parents. It is still necessary “complete the procedures on time”warns Violaine Wallet.

Conversely, the unpaid leave is much more penalizing. “No contribution, no rights”, summarizes the expert. Without salary, no contributions are paid and no additional quarter is validated. The same risk concerns independent who choose to be remunerated only in dividendsthis income does not give rise to retirement rights.

How to limit the damage of part-time work on your retirement?

Contrary to popular belief, to work has part time does not automatically lose quarters. An 80% (4/5th) employee most often validates his four annual quarters, provided that his salary remains sufficient. Even part-time, this is often the case if the annual remuneration exceeds the threshold allowing four quarters to be validated. On the other hand, the amount of the future pension is impacted, because contributions are calculated on a salary weaker. “ Part-time work has more impact on the level of the pension than on the number of quarters, except when it is accompanied by very low remuneration », summarizes Violaine Wallet. The longer the part-time period, the more significant its effect on the final pension can therefore be. To limit the damage, en 2026, it is enough to receive 7,212 euros gross in the year to validate four quartersregardless of the number of months worked. “This income must be collected over at least two months,” specifies Violaine Wallet. A little-known rule that can avoid losing an entire year of rights.

His main advice is to first regularly check your career record on Retirement info and keep absolutely all its pay slips. Forgotten or poorly recorded periods are far from exceptional and can cost more than a temporary passage to part-time. Correcting these errors several years before departure also leaves more time to consider, if necessary, a redemption quarters or other optimization solutions.
