At what age can you start to give pocket money to your child?

Will pocket money be used to buy leisure products (books, cinema places, etc.), clothes, food, video games …? It is therefore advisable to set a framework: pocket money should not be used to make purchases that parents disapprove of, purchases superior to a certain amount without the agreement of the latter, etc.

How to give pocket money to a teenager?

The frequency to give pocket money to a teenager depends mainly on his age. Before 10 years, children do not have the same notion of temporality as adults. In other words, they will be unable to manage a long -term budget. It is therefore advisable to favor Pocket money every week. After entering college, teens can more easily set long -term goals and perceive pocket money monthly. The amount of money must evolve with the child’s age and needs.

How much pocket money to give to 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 or 18 years?

Average for a 10-12 year old child

As the majority approach, the amount of pocket money is at the highest. It amounts to an average of 40 euros per month For young people aged 17 to 18.

Extension, gift … other elements to take into account

But all of these amounts can evolve with small extensions at the end of the month, gifts, payments or manual donations from other family members. The resources of the household, the family composition and the lifestyle constitute other elements which impact the amount of pocket money for a teenager.

A couple with high income with a single child will be more likely to opt for a pocket money budget higher than a family with more modest resources and at the head of a siblings of several children.

In what form to give pocket money?

For a long time, the parents gave their children’s pocket money in cash, with a few coins and/or one or two tickets per month. This time is over. Increasingly, transactions are made dematerialized, including in the youngest.

From 12 years old and after entering college, many children already have a bank account managed by their parents. The latter can follow live how the pocket money is spent.   • Help in the animation of children in a municipal youth council,
  • Inventory in a library …

Mission remuneration carried out

Adolescents who carry out missions in favor of the territory concerned sign a participation contract or a charter of engagement. They perceive in return for remuneration comparable to pocket money (Five euros for a half-day missionwithin the limit of maximum aid of 2,000 euros).
