At home, as elsewhere, it is important to follow the advice of the pros to save money. It’s a small gesture for you, but for your wallet, it means a lot.

With energy inflation weighing heavily on our household budgets, we are all on the lookout for the slightest tip to reduce the bill. All devices on standby are tracked, radiators are turned down a small degree, laundry postponed to more off-peak hours… But the solution lies elsewhere. One of the most powerful levers for reducing your expenses is hidden in an often forgotten corner: your hallway closet or laundry room.

Your water heater is a real consumption marathoner. He works day and night to guarantee you a hot shower at all times. But the truth is, most of our balloons are set to a power that is far too high compared to our real needs. Plumbers see it on the ground: we overheat our water, thus wasting precious energy and tens of euros each year without even realizing it.

Beyond the financial aspect, this unsuitable setting prematurely fatigues your installation. Hot water encourages the appearance of scale, which then reduces the efficiency of your device. It’s a vicious circle: the more limescale builds up, the more your equipment has to force itself to heat up, and the higher your bill goes.

Fortunately, plumbers and ADEME – the Ecological Transition Agency – agree that it is a question of temperature. To keep your comfort while reducing your expenses: going from 60°C to 55°C is often enough to save around 10% on your hot water bill. At this temperature, your comfort remains the same in the shower, but you avoid unnecessary strain on your resistance and you protect your installation in the long term.

You simply have to be careful not to go too low – not less than 50°C – to keep healthy water, without the risk of Legionnaires’ disease, in your tank. By opting for this happy medium recommended by professionals, you combine peace of mind, longevity of your equipment and real savings from next month. A few degrees cooler, that you won’t even feel, can make a big difference to your wallet.
