Are you gaining enough to be part of the “rich” of France? To find out, you have to take a look at the annual report of the Observatory of Inequalities, whose 2025 edition was published this Tuesday, June 3. A large survey that allows you to locate yourself on the scale of wealth in France, especially according to your income level. First landmark used: the median standard of living. In 2023, he reached 2,183 euros monthly for a single personafter taxes and social benefits. In other words, half of French people earn less, the other half more. And from this, the observatory defines two thresholds. On the one hand, the poverty line, set at 1,014 euros (50% of median income). On the other, the wealth threshold, calculated as double the median income: 4,056 euros monthly, always for a single person.
But beware: do not only trust this threshold, which can give a deceptive vision of your situationespecially if you are in a relationship or have children. Because as the observatory recalls, “Depending on the composition of the family to which we belong, we are not rich or poor with the same level of income”. This is where the sharesused to adjust income to the number of people in the household. The first adult then counts for a partthe second for half-start. For children, it is also a half-share for each child at least 14 years old, and 0.3 share For the youngest.
A wealth threshold at 4,056 euros per month for a single person
For a single person, you are thus considered to be poor below 1,014 euros per month. If you earn between 1,608 and 2,941 euros, you are part of the middle class. Beyond 2,941 eurosyou enter the category of wealthy households, and if your income exceeds 4,056 euros After taxes and social benefits: you are officially one of the wealthiest households in France. For a childless couple, the poverty line increases to 1,521 euros monthly. The middle class is stretching Between 2,413 and 4,411 euros of net monthly income. To be one of the richest, this same couple must earn more than 6,083 euros net per month.
For families with children, the thresholds are therefore logically higher. A couple with two teenagers over 14 is considered poor if it receives less than 2,534 euros monthly, and is part of the middle class if their income is between 4,021 and 7,352 euros per month. He will be considered rich if he earns at least 10,138 euros monthly.
