Through spectacular photographic images, both terrestrial and underwater, the film tells the daily challenges, the innovative solutions and the hope of those who work to protect one of the most important ecosystems for marine biodiversity. The film begins with the best known success story of the program, the restoration of the Hope Reef in Indonesia.

Hope Reef was built thanks to a simple but revolutionary invention: a steel structure called Reef Star, which transformed a seabed destroyed and covered with coral rubble into a lush coral reef. Through the direct testimonies of the local volunteers engaged in the safeguarding of their coral reefs, the spectators will discover how the MSS team, led by Professor David Smith, It is collaborating with the coastal communities and NGOs to expand the project on a global scale and obtain an even greater impact.

The documentary returns a realistic picture of the challenges and difficulties faced, as well as the successes and the goals achieved, highlighting The hope, the constant commitment and the transformative potential of one of the greatest and most ambitious training programs for the restoration never realizedI* (mss impact report, 2024).

«Reef Builders tells not only a project of environmental restoration, but a concrete vision of the future that Mars intends to help build. Through the visibility and sequel to our brands, we have a platform of great impact, and we feel the responsibility of putting it at the service of a positive change, “he said Aldo MastelloneCorporate Affairs Senior Manager of Mars Italia, «The launch of the documentary Reef Builders It represents a significant moment in the mission of the Sheba Hope GroW ™ program. With this project we want to inspire and educate an increasing number of people on the importance of supporting the restoration of coral reefs».

Scientists estimate that, without concrete interventions, 90% of the tropical coral reefs of the planet could disappear by 2043 (Icri), with serious consequences for 25% of the marine life (EPA) and for about a billion people who depend directly or indirectly on the ecosystem services they offer, such as the protection of the coasts and the sustainability of fish resources (Noaa).

Direct and produced by Stephen Shearman, with the executive producers Victoria Noble and Ben Padfield, and the actress and environmental activist Auli’i cravalho As a associated manufacturer, Reef Builders accompanies the spectators on a journey that touches Bontosua (Indonesia), Lamu (Kenya), Moore Reef (Australia) and the birthplace of Aui’i, O’Ahu (Hawai’i), offering an unprecedented look at the struggle to save the coral reefs of the planet.
