Theater and film actress and also singer, the Irish Jessie Buckley struck, and partly even divided, public opinion with a speech on the occasion of the Oscar ceremony (awarded to her as best leading actress for Hamnet, the film directed by Chloé Zhao based on the bestseller by Maggie O’Farrell) which was a tribute to the family, with mum and dad present in the room, to the love for her husband and their 8 month old daughter, and to all mothers because, she said, “we come from a lineage of women.”

HIS FULL SPEECH

«Thank you so much. This is… this is really something special.

Thank you to the extraordinary women I stand alongside: I am inspired by your art and your heart, and I want to work with each of you. Thank you to the producers who built this ship on which we can be together, and to my traveling companions for life — Hilda, Jessica, Lindsey, Zack. None of this would be possible without you.

My family, my Irish family, is all here. Mom, dad, thank you for teaching us to dream and to never let ourselves be defined by the expectations of others, but to always follow our passion.

And you, Fred… I love you. You are the most amazing dad. You are my best friend, and I want to have twenty thousand more children with you. Really. I want it!

And Isla, my eight-month-old, who has absolutely no idea what’s going on and is probably dreaming about milk… but this is a pretty important moment. I love you, and I love being your mom. I can’t wait to discover life with you.

Chloé (Zhao) and Maggie (O’Farrell), for giving me the opportunity to meet this luminous woman and to embark on the journey to understand a mother’s capacity for love: it was the most extraordinary meeting of my life.

Today is Mother’s Day in the UK, so seeI would like to dedicate this award to the wonderful chaos of a mother’s heart. We all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds.

Thank you for recognizing me in this role. It’s the greatest honor. I can’t even believe it.”

His career before the Oscar

Irish actress Jessie Buckley in Hamnet plays Agnes, William Shakespeare’s wife devastated by the death of her son Hamnet. An emotional and powerful performance that won over critics and audiences throughout the awards season. The actress, 36, has dominated awards season, also winning the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award and BAFTA.

Curiously, Buckley did not yet have children when she played the role of Agnes, but she said she already deeply desired motherhood. A week after filming ended Hamnet she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl last fall.

Born in 1989 in Killarney, Ireland, Buckley never imagined a career in Hollywood. Daughter of a poet and an opera singer, he began to make himself known by participating in the BBC talent show in 2008 I’d Do Anythingbefore entering the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

After his theatrical debut with Shakespeare, he conquered international audiences with roles in Chernobyl, Wild Rose, Women Talking – The right to choose And The dark daughter based on the novel by Elena fewrrasnte), which in 2022 earned her her first Oscar nomination as supporting actress. His performance in the comedy inspired by a true story was extraordinary, Mischief at home.
