It happened that one of the trusted men closest to the head of state, Francesco Saverio Garofani, was having dinner “in an informal context”, perhaps in Berlin following Mattarella, and indulged in political discussions among friends, hypothesizing scenarios and discussing “shocks” capable of overthrowing the government majority. But above all it happened that at least one of the friends was not so trustworthy, if it is true that Garofani’s disquisitions – we don’t know how true, we don’t know how manipulated or decontextualized – ended up in an article in Verità, one of the most aggressive newspapers of the right, known for its pro-Putinism. There may be, even if it shows the level at which the Italian press is dressed: a rumor becomes news, even a State conspiracy, as if State conspiracies were hatched in a Berlin beer hall and conspiracy theorists were stupid enough to tell it among friends, perhaps in a public place. But it’s certainly not the first time, we’ve gotten used to it by now, fantasy is no longer a scandal in journalism, and then one might say: who cares.
What cannot be allowed is that the group leader of the Brothers of Italy in the Chamber Galeazzo Bignami – someone who in his youth dressed up and had himself photographed as a Nazi complete with a swastika – collected the sludge fired from the Truth fan and threw it at the Colle address, in Parliament, passing it off as a plot against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, of whom he is one of the closest collaborators.
Bignami even addressed the Quirinale, inviting him to deny the “conspiracy” according to which “Quirinale councilors would hope for initiatives against the prime minister”. Therefore he hypothesized that Mattarella was a conspiracy theorist, bordering on article 278 of the penal code, which provides for one to five years in prison for anyone who attacks the honor and prestige of the head of state. The note released by the Quirinale speaks of “astonishment” and the “border of the ridiculous” even if it all makes you laugh up to a certain point. Also because Garofani is also an advisor for the Defense of the Quirinale and the slush arrives just after the meeting of the Supreme Defense Council which is chaired by the head of State, the constitutional arbiter guaranteeing the balance of the constitutional powers of the State, impartial by definition, as he has always demonstrated in his two mandates. The same one who in recent days in Berlin had warned against the swarm of Doctor Strangeloves in the world and had stigmatized wars of aggression as crimes, including the destabilization implemented by Russia. As it happens. And the disturbing silence of Forza Italia and Lega did not help, as in dissociating themselves they limited themselves to a few perfunctory phrases. Not to mention the prime minister’s embarrassed silence – at least in the first 48 hours, before rushing to Mattarella to avoid a constitutional clash, but defining Garofani’s words as inappropriate and therefore agreeing with Bignami. But the subtle nervousness that hovers in the ranks of the Center-Right cannot justify a ramshackle and clumsy attempt of this kind by one of Giorgia’s trusted men.
