Treatment of hair loss and prostate adenoma in humans, finasteride can cause suicidal ideas, confirm the health authorities.

Summary

Like any drugs, it can have side effects. But they may be more numerous than estimated by the health authorities. On September 25, 2025, the ANSM confirms that the benefit/risk ratio of finasteride 1 mg in androgenetic alopecia is unfavorable. “THE suicidal ideas are added to undesirable effects “.

What is the finasteride?

Finasteride is the active substance of Chibro-Proscar® used in urology for urinary disorders linked to benign prostate hypertrophy (adenoma) and Propecia®, indicated in the treatment of hair loss (alopecia) in men aged 18 to 41. It is a medication reserved for men. “The action of the finasteride consists in reducing the rate of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone which promotes hair loss and also the normal growth of the prostate”, explains Dr. Charles, head of the Urology Service at the CHU de Poitiers. The Propecia® 1 mg medication like Chibro-Proscar® 5 mg and their generics are not over the counter but only on medical prescription.

What is its effectiveness?

The effects of the finasteride generally manifest themselves 3 to 6 months after the start of treatment and often fade 6 months after stopping treatment. “This medication is especially effective when alopecia is taken care of before it reaches a too advanced stage. It is a long -term treatment which provides satisfactory results after several years (around 5 years), According to the doctor. This medication is effective in a few months on obstructive urinary symptoms. ”

Side effects that can be serious

Serious cases of psychiatric disorders and sexual disorders (which can sometimes last long after stopping treatment) are reported, in connection with the intervention of the drug at the hormonal level. In addition, suicidal ideas have been recognized as undesirable effects for two drugs containing finasteride (Propecia, Chibro-Proscar). The delay in the appearance of side effects is variable, from a few days to a few years after the start of treatment. These side effects are:

  • Increased volume and breast sensitivity (gynecomastia)
  • erection disorders,
  • ejaculation disorders,
  • testicular pain,
  • decrease in libido
  • anxiety,
  • depression,
  • suicidal thoughts likely to lead to suicide
  • allergic reactions such as hives and itching of the skin

The duration of side effects varies from patient to patient.

What if you feel side effects?

► In the event of modification of your mood (depressed mood, depression or suicidal thoughts), stop your treatment and consult your doctor.

► In the event of the appearance of sexual function disorders (erection disorders, ejaculation disorders, decrease in libido) or any other undesirable effect, quickly signal it to your doctor. In some patients, these disturbances can contribute to mood changes, including suicidal thoughts. These sexual disorders may persist after stopping your treatment.

► In the event of prolonged treatment by Finasteride, a reassessment of its relevance must be regularly carried out during a consultation with your doctor.

Thank you to Dr. Thomas Charles, head of the Urology Service at the CHU de Poitiers.
