While SOS requests for ships of shipwrecked people in danger in the central Mediterranean continue, the Libra ship of the Navy has landed after days of navigation in the Albanian port of Shengjin to disembark eight migrants destined to reach the detention centers with attached prison despite the precise provisions of the European Court of Justice and the Italian judges who had not validated the first 12 detentions in the first transfer to Albania.
The eight migrants selected on board the Italian ships and headed to Albania are five respectively Bengalis and three Egyptians. Countries which in the Italian government’s decree law of 23 October are to be considered safe, but not for Europe and for the Italian courts.
Just a few days ago the immigration section of the Court of Catania had disapplied the very recent anti-migrant decree of the Meloni government, establishing that European Union law is to be considered primary with respect to internal legislation and therefore not validating the detention of five migrants who arrived on 31 October at the CPR in Pozzallo who, as on this occasion, were Egyptians and Bangladeshis.
Nationality evidently at the center of a clash that cannot be defined as political because there is precise jurisprudence, the most recent that of the Court of Justice of the European Union which on 4 October 2024 indicates a country is only safe if it is safe in its entirety and for all its individuals.
Therefore, as in the first operation in Albania, the verdict of the judges is now awaited and the eight migrants “selected on board” and taken to Albania could quickly return to Italy as happened to the first 12 transferred back onto the Libra ship and destined to reach the Cara of Bari.
In addition to the eight migrants destined to reach the Albanian centers again from 4 October, 2033 people disembarked in Italy, in particular with autonomous landings in Lampedusa. The Ocean Viking instead rescued 182 migrants in 24 hours. But why is the Italian government trying to send migrants to Albania again? «He tries again because he has a simple objective: la propaganda. In this way we try to convince foreign public opinion that these people are no longer landing in Italy, but in Albania. In the specific case of these eight people who have reached Shengjin it is a detention that took place with a verbal order from officials of the Ministry of the Interior. Furthermore, as happened on the first occasion, these people are deprived of their rights, their freedom, the possibility of communicating with the outside world because they deprive them of their cell phones and finally the right to defense“, explains the immigration lawyer Rosa Emanuela Lo Faro who adds: “These eight castaways waited over 48 hours on board the Navy ship, exceeding the legal deadlines, and there continues to be little transparency over the entire procedure”
The operation of the Italian government’s migrant centers in Albania it cost over one billion euros: 800 million between now and 2028, to which are added three million per year for the identification center, 200 million for connections, an unestimated expense of the ship that is called upon to transport migrants to Albania every time in addition to all the expenses of the hundreds of law enforcement officers employed in the operation. The maximum capacity of the centers in Albania is 10,500 people per year, compared to the 12 or 8 at the center of an operation that continues to be discussed.
