Thousands of young people can recover nearly 5,000 euros by their majority. Put aside year after year during their schooling, this money comes back by right from the age of 18 … provided you request it.
Billions of euros in social assistance remain on the table, for lack of beneficiaries to claim them. Forgotten, ignorance, vague procedures or lack of support: the reasons are numerous, and the young people are among the most affected. At 18, when they start their adult life, some people know that they have the right to receive a sum which could allow them to finance a permit, a security deposit or even their studies. And yet, just request it online.
For those who meet the criteria, the restitution can reach nearly 5,000 euros. The aid is paid in one go by the Caisse des Dépôts, with interest. This sum corresponds to the back -to -school allowance (ARS), paid each year by CAF to help cover the costs related to schooling. Since the law of March 14, 2016, when a child has been placed in childhood social assistance (ASE), this aid is no longer transmitted to the referent adult or the reception structure, but directly recorded in an account opened at the Caisse des Dépôts. The money remains blocked there until the majority of the young person (or his emancipation), where he can then request the restitution. This is an individual right, which is not automatic: without a approach on its part, the aid is never paid.
Take the case of a child placed at the ASE at the age of 8, in 2016, and who continued to be taken care of up to his 18 years in 2025. Each year, he generated a right to the back -to -school allowance, whose amounts vary depending on the age: between 8 to 10 years: (around 365 to 370 euros per year); Between 11 to 14 years (around 390 to 410 euros per year); Between 15 to 17 years (around 430 to 460 euros per year). By accumulating these amounts over ten years, the total reaches around 4,440 euros, not to mention the capitalized interest each year by the Caisse des Dépôts (current rate of 3.71 %). The final amount at 18 years old can therefore come close to the 5000 euros, according to the student’s journey.
To recover this amount, the young person must simply go to the Consignations.Caissesdepots.fr site, check if concerned, and make an online request with the required documents (identity document, proof of placement, RIB, etc.). The device remains little known, and yet it allows you to concretely change the departure in the lives of many young people who, so far, had little or no money aside to gain independence.
