It “releases feel-good hormones”. Insomniacs will love it.
A fitted sheet, a duvet, one or two pillows: this is the classic configuration of our bed. But as comfortable as it may be, it does not guarantee restful sleep for everyone. What if the secret to putting an end to sleep disorders did not lie in the quality of the bedding, but in the way of doing it? This is the promise of a new tip that is a hit on social networks: the “potato bed” (or “potato bed” in English). According to Internet users, this surprising method helps you fall asleep much more easily.
This technique consists of creating an ultra soft bed like a real cocoon reminiscent of the inside of a baked potato. So you have to like the feeling of being tucked in, almost tight. This method is similar to the effect of weighted blankets, heavier than traditional blankets, which exert gentle and constant pressure on the body. According to Hannah Shore, head of sleep science at Mattress Online, a British mattress brand, this hugging effect is beneficial for sleep: “That extra light pressure releases feel-good hormones, which can leave you feeling relaxed, happy, and safe—the perfect combination for falling asleep.”
So, how do you turn your bed into a “potato bed”? The trick is to turn a fitted sheet over, elastic side up. Use the edges to create a “nest”: stuff them with pillows or cushions to form a barrier. Place a first duvet or blanket on top to secure the structure. Finally add your usual duvet in the center, in the hollow thus formed. Your potato bed is ready.
If the idea is attractive, there is a small drawback to be aware of: our body needs to cool down to fall into sleep and particularly deep sleep, but the “potato” concept can trap hot air and therefore not work for everyone.
Another downside is support: putting duvets and pillows together can interfere with body alignment and cause pain when waking up. “This type of mattress is generally great for lounging, but may not be the best choice for a full night’s sleep.” In summary: a perfect tip for a cozy and comforting nap or to fall asleep faster but not necessarily ideal for sleeping 12 hours.
