Something is moving at the UN and for once no veto is blocking the decision-making process. The news is that the United Nations Security Council has voted in favor of a US resolution supporting a ceasefire plan for the war in Gaza.
The proposal establishes the conditions for a “full and complete ceasefire”, the release of hostages held by Hamas, the return of the remains of dead hostages and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners. Fourteen of the 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the US-drafted resolution. Russia chose to abstain after having long threatened to exercise its veto.
“Hamas can now see that the international community is united, united behind an agreement that will save lives and help Palestinian civilians in Gaza rebuild and heal,” he said Linda Thomas-GreenfieldUnited States Ambassador to the United Nations.
The resolution states that Israel has accepted the ceasefire proposal and urges Hamas to accept it. This is the proposal that was presented by United States President Joe Biden in a televised statement on May 31st.
This morning the news arrived that Hamas had accepted the ceasefire resolution voted by the United Nations Security Council and is ready to negotiate the details. He told the Reuters agency Sami Abu Zuhri, senior Hamas official, adding that it is up to Washington to ensure Israel respects it. “The US administration is facing a real test to follow through on its commitments to compel the occupation to immediately end the war in implementation of the UN Security Council resolution,” Zuhri added.
However, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, visiting Tel Aviv, said Hamas’ response was inconclusiveadding that “what matters” is what the Hamas leadership in Gaza says, “and that’s what we don’t have.” If the proposal doesn’t proceed, it’s “their fault,” the US diplomatic chief said.
The proposal presented by Israel to the United States and Arab mediators from Qatar and Egypt has not been made public and it is not clear whether it differs from the one presented by President Biden. The proposal was approved by Israel’s three-member war cabinet and was not disclosed to the entire government. Some far-right ministers have already made it known that they are against it.
While waiting for the ceasefire, the fighting continues. The Israeli army said on Tuesday that four Israeli soldiers were killed and at least seven others injured after Palestinian militants blew up a building where troops were operating in the city of Rafah. Some of the wounded soldiers are in serious condition.
