Claustrophobia alert! This building is unique in the world. It brings together 10,000 people in 2,243 housing units, spread over 18 floors. Where is it located?
Between science fiction films and reality there is sometimes only one step. This architectural example proves it well. While this terrifying but impressive building has been seen in films like Transformers: Age of Extinction or the remake of the anime Ghost in the Shellit is also well anchored in reality.
Nicknamed the “Monster Building“because of its extraordinary (not to say iconic) infrastructure, it is not far from 10,000 people who live in the 2,243 accommodations distributed in the five buildings united in a single block, all on 18 floors. architectural prowess whose discordance must also be highlighted, whether in the choice of colors, the narrow corridors, the interiors of only 10m2 and the balconies hiding the little natural light…
However, if this building was built like this it is to respond to a demand: the significant wave of immigration experienced by the city of Hong Kong, during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, in 1966. It is Watt Mo -kei, a Hong Kong businessman, who seized the opportunity by financing this social housing project in King’s Road. Surprisingly, this colossal construction complied with the building codes and government regulations of the time.
Since this period, the city of Hong Kong has not succeeded in relieving congestion in its city which still had 7,333,200 inhabitants in 2022. A problem whose solution is to stack apartments again and again until they reach impressive heights. Despite everything, the population does not seem bothered by this overcrowding or by their rent (between 500 and 650 euros), and the tourists are amazed. The hashtag #MonsterBuiling has more than 24,000 posts. A real tourist attraction like our Eiffel Tower!
