A vast scientific study has revealed the dog breed that defies time better than all others, and this undisputed champion of longevity may well surprise you.

When you adopt a pet, it instantly becomes a full member of the family. The only real fault of our faithful canine friends is undoubtedly their life expectancy, far too short compared to the love we have for them. Faced with this heartbreaking observation, many future owners wonder: are there dogs naturally predisposed to live longer? The answer is a big yes. A vast scientific study looked into the question, analyzing data from tens of thousands of canines to unlock the secret of their longevity.

Carried out by the prestigious Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in the United Kingdom among 30,000 dogs who died between 2016 and 2020, this major survey highlighted fascinating disparities between different canine profiles. Researchers have discovered that morphology plays a determining role. Generally speaking, small dogs with elongated snouts have a significantly longer life expectancy than larger dogs or flat-faced breeds. But at the top of this ranking, a small dog with a strong character has managed to stand out from the crowd, ahead of all its peers.

So, who is this undisputed champion of longevity? It is a lively, intelligent and full of energy companion, often recognizable by its white coat spotted with black or fawn. According to the results of the study, the Jack Russell Terrier has the highest average life expectancy, reaching 12.72 years (compared to 11 years on average for all breeds combined), with many individuals happily exceeding the 15 year mark. One of the oldest dogs in the cohort has even reached the age of 19. This little athlete benefits from a robust genetic heritage and a natural morphology which protects him from numerous hereditary diseases.

The Jack Russell is not the only one to shine for its longevity. On the podium, he is closely followed by the Yorkshire Terrier (12.54 years) and the Border Collie (12.10 years). Conversely, the study highlights a much sadder reality for brachycephalic breeds (with squashed noses), although they have been very fashionable in recent years. The French Bulldog, for example, has a dramatically low average life expectancy of 4.53 years, mainly due to respiratory and health problems linked to its hyper-typical body shape.

Of course, these statistics, as serious as they are, remain only averages. The life expectancy of your four-legged companion, whether he is a proud Jack Russell or an adorable crossbreed (who often enjoy excellent health thanks to genetic mixing), will always depend on the attention you give him. A balanced diet, regular physical activity adapted to its needs and rigorous veterinary monitoring remain your best allies in keeping your best friend by your side for as long as possible.
