Plumbing is a bit like electricity: we would like to understand something about it, but we prefer not to get involved. Often, we observe from afar, without worrying too much. However, whether you are an owner or a tenant, there is only one essential thing to do.
Rubens Attelann, manager of the Attelann plumbing company, is sad to see that so few individuals take care of their devices. And yet, their proper functioning and a lifespan which conforms to what is announced is possible, if and only if, recurring maintenance is carried out on each of the devices.
It is the same for the great forgotten in French homes. It is more or less imposing, rarely makes noise and provides unlimited hot water: yes, it is indeed the electric water heater. This large reservoir of water is abused by most people. However, annual descaling is essential to save on your water bill, ensure you have hot water at the right temperature, but also extend its lifespan.
Rubens Attellan assures that annual descaling is a simple operation to carry out even without being a plumber. Simply turn off the electricity and water supply to avoid any accidents. Then, the appliance will drain in three stages: close the cold water supply, activate the drain valve and let the water flow into a container. Once the water heater is empty, you can open it, making sure to unplug the thermostat by unscrewing the electrical wires. Once the dismantling is done, simply clean all the elements in order to eliminate all traces of limescale. For internal walls and elements affected by limescale, use a soft brush or cloth to remove deposits without damaging the water heater components. You can immerse the resistance in a basin filled with white vinegar to dissolve the limescale. Reassemble everything in the opposite direction and that’s it.
If you do not want to venture into the tank, call a plumber and at least drain the water heater every quarter. It is recommended to descale the water heater every year in regions where the water is hard, i.e. rich in limescale. In areas with softer water, descaling every 2 to 3 years may be sufficient.
