It also provides a boost of energy.
Shortening days, dropping temperatures and often low skies: autumn is well and truly here and is putting a strain on the morale of many of us. Lack of light, in particular, can cause a feeling of fatigue, irritability and even a real “seasonal blues”. Fortunately, to help us get through this period more peacefully, there are comforting foods and drinks, real anti-depression allies, which act positively on our brain and our mood.
Dr Andreas Hagemann, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, reveals his favorite anti-blues drink, ideal for rainy and gloomy weather. Questioned by the German media Style, he explains that, according to several serious studies, this drink is “considered a real pick-me-up, not only thanks to its content of theobromine, a substance similar to caffeine, but also thanks to its richness in selenium, which helps stabilize mood and strengthen the brain and nervous system.” It can also provide a slight boost of energy and a feeling of alertness without the jitters or side effects of coffee.
This gourmet drink which is good for the soul is none other than hot chocolate, thanks to its main ingredient: cocoa. In terms of quantity, the expert recommends drinking a good 200 ml cup in the afternoon or when the blues are felt.
In order to get all the benefits without the disadvantages of excess sugar, Dr Hagemann advises opting for unsweetened cocoa (100% cocoa), to maximize the intake of theobromine and selenium, while minimizing the impact on blood sugar. Oat milk or if you can digest it, semi-skimmed cow’s milk offers a good, creamy texture without being too heavy and too fatty.
To complement the comforting effect of cocoa, Dr. Hagemann recommends getting outside as much as possible to capture natural light and stock up on vitamin D, even on overcast days. In addition, maintaining regular physical activity (even a simple 30-minute walk per day) helps release endorphins, the feel-good hormones. Finally, it is essential not to isolate yourself: maintaining social ties and sharing pleasant moments with loved ones are effective shields against seasonal depression.
