A ban panel has been concerned, since 2024, has other passengers on the road, but this change is not really seen.
Those who passed their highway code several years ago have integrated the meaning of the B9B panel. Round and surrounded by a red circle, it has a bike drawn in the center on a white background. This panel belongs to the prohibition category, and, at first glance, it means that cyclists cannot take this path. It is often found at the entrance to the fast tracks or highways, where speed makes the presence of bikes dangerous. It can also be installed before a tunnel or a bridge, when the conditions do not guarantee the safety of cyclists among the cars.
Over the years, this panel has become a usual benchmark on the roads. But a decree published in March 2024 in the Official Journal clearly indicates that it no longer concerns only bikes. A year after this new rule, the most novice passengers are not necessarily aware. “”Still you need to know “, Said Théo, who has just started the electric scooter to go to his workplace. “The rules for scooters are the same as for bikes, but it’s still a little blurred for me”, explains the young man to us.
Indeed, the panel which prohibits access to cyclists is also intended for users of motorized personal travel equipment, called EDPM. This includes electric scooters (with or without a saddle), bears, monoroues and other devices of the same type. The text also specifies that EDPMs must respect the tricolor lights with an acronym representing a cycle. As for the electric scooters, they must roll on the cycle paths and respect the rules of double direction.
Clearly, even if a simple bike is drawn on this panel, all EDPMs must respect the same rules on the road. If an electric scooter rolls beyond this panel, the driver risks a lump sum fine in the amount of 135 euros. Remember that in France, you must be at least 14 years old to be able to drive an electric scooter.
