Forget cider vinegar, there are much more effective ways to get rid of those pesky gnats, which seem to have invaded the four corners of the house. This mixture is fatal to them.
The first warm weather brings with it its share of inconveniences and the swarms of midges have been one of them. These little winged invaders appear as soon as a storm threatens. They swirl around your fruit basket, get into your glasses and spoil the carefully crafted aesthetic of your kitchen, but not only that. And you’ve tried everything: unsavory adhesive tape, chemical sprays with a heady smell or the endless bowl of vinegar that sits sadly on the central island. But nothing helps, the invasion persists and your patience is wearing thin.
So the solution is not in a cupboard of cleaning products, but rather in your lifestyle. To save your interior from invasion and regain some peace of mind, there is an anti-midge method that combines formidable efficiency and visual elegance. A trick which is based on a little-known biological flaw of these insects: their absolute addiction to fermentation aromas and tannins.
To make this trap which is unlike any other, equip yourself with a pretty amber glass bottle or a small old vase. Pour in a little red wine – even some forgotten bottle dregs will do – and add a single drop of black soap. The real key to success lies in the installation: make a funnel from a sheet of paper and place it over the neck, tip down, without it touching the liquid.
It’s a question of physics and greed. Attracted by the sweet scent of the wine, the midges easily engulf themselves in the large paper cone. Once inside the bottle, their instinct is to fly upwards to escape. However, the narrow opening of the funnel then becomes impassable for them. Prisoners of this glass chamber, they end up settling on the wine. Thanks to the black soap which broke the surface tension of the liquid, they flow instantly.
It’s clean, immediate and incredibly satisfying. Not only does your work surface regain its splendor, but this little bottle, which looks like an object of curiosity, blends perfectly into your decor, without ever betraying its deadly function.
