No matter how regularly you clean them, your toilets don’t always smell like roses and it’s a problem that you’re struggling to solve. Fortunately, there is a way to perfume your toilets quite naturally, as long as you do it sparingly. We’ll explain.
Used several times a day, your toilets may also suffer from insufficient ventilation or be humid, all factors which explain the persistence of bad odors.
Regular cleaning, airing, air fresheners, baking soda, white vinegar, dried flowers or potpourri… Despite all your good intentions, your toilets never smell like roses. This was also the case for Sophie, owner of a beautiful home in Provence, who found this simple trick to get rid of bad smells in her toilets. Since she puts a few drops of niaouli essential oils or room fragrance on the cardboard inside her toilet paper rolls, a delicate floral scent reigns in her conveniences and compliments come pouring in from her guests.
However, in the comments under his video, it’s a different story… Many Internet users complain about the dangers of using essential oils, especially in a small space like this. Why? First, essential oils are very concentrated. Used in large quantities or incorrectly, they can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions or chemical burns. Second, they can interact with medications. For example, grapefruit essential oil can interfere with the metabolism of certain medications, making their effect stronger or weaker.
Third, inhaling them can cause respiratory problems, especially in people with asthma or allergies. Finally, essential oils are not recommended for pregnant women, babies and young children, as their systems are more sensitive. It is therefore important to use them with caution, follow recommendations and consult a healthcare professional if necessary.
To perfume your toilet with essential oils, it is therefore essential to respect a moderate dosage in order to avoid any risk of overexposure. Here are some tips for a good dosage. If you are using a diffuser, add 3 to 5 drops of essential oil to the diffuser’s water tank. This is generally enough to perfume a small room such as the toilet. For a homemade spray, mix 10 to 15 drops of essential oil with 100 ml of water and a little alcohol (such as vodka) to help disperse the oil. Shake well before each use and spray in the toilets.
And rather than putting the essential oil directly on the toilet paper roll – this could soak the paper attached to it – we recommend that you place 2 to 3 drops on a cotton ball and place it in a discreet corner of the toilet. Replace the soaked cotton every few days and your toilet will (almost) never smell bad again!
