When we have family or friends over at home, it’s a bit of a bustle. Shopping, cleaning, little touches, everything must be perfect. So when our guests have this nasty habit, it’s a guaranteed crisis.
We welcome them with a smile, we refine the lighting in the living room and we carefully arrange a few scented candles to create this cocooning atmosphere that is so much like us. Receiving loved ones is an art of living, a moment of sharing where you literally open the doors to your privacy. But as you uncork a bottle and laugh in the kitchen, can you imagine what’s going on behind your closed bathroom door?
The decoration of a house is a reflection of our personality. Every trinket, every color choice and every piece of furniture tells a story. For many of us, the bathroom is the ultimate sanctuary, the place where the show stops and makes way for the natural. We take care of the aesthetics there, of course, but we also store our little secrets, our care rituals and sometimes our happy daily mess. Although we thought it private, this place becomes, during a dinner, the site of an activity that is, to say the least, indiscreet.
You might think that our guests are simply taking advantage of this moment of solitude to powder their noses or straighten a lock of hair in front of the bathroom mirror. The reality is a little less glorious and may increase your tension during your next reception.
According to a revealing survey*, going through the convenience box often turns into a veritable domestic spying operation. Once alone in their host’s bathroom, nearly one in four French people (23%) admit to having already opened a cupboard, simply out of curiosity. Whether they’re trying to find out your favorite brand of cream or evaluating the organization of your shelves, your guests are much nosier than you imagined.
From now on, when you hear the click of a cupboard door in the hallway, you will know that between decoration and discretion, your guests have chosen their side. A word of advice: put your drawers away, you are being watched!
*This survey was carried out by FLASHS for Vente-unique from March 6 to 9, 2026, via a self-administered online questionnaire with a panel of 2,000 French men and women aged 18 and over, representative of the French population.
