While some are already thinking about summer vacations, many mothers are reducing their professional activity to manage the children without knowing that, in certain cases, CAF can continue to contribute to their retirement.
In France, career interruptions remain overwhelmingly a women’s affair. Part-time work after a birth, parental leave, temporary leave to manage a sick or disabled child: these periods often leave traces on future pension. Drees figures still show it today: women receive much lower pensions than men. And it’s not just a question of salary. It’s also an accumulation of small professional breaks that end up being expensive when you leave.
The problem is that many still think that a retirement is only built when you work. So when activity slows down or stops for a few years, panic slowly begins to rear its head. Some mothers even discover very late that they could have continued to validate rights throughout this period. However, the information does exist on the official sites. The CAF explains in particular that certain parents can continue to benefit from retirement rights even if they significantly reduce their activity to raise a child thanks to its assistance called Old Age Insurance for the Stay-at-Home Parent, AVPF.
On its website, the organization specifies that this mechanism “guarantees continuity in the constitution of retirement rights for people ceasing or reducing their professional activity to care for a child”. The most surprising thing is that many parents concerned are completely unaware that they already benefit from the system. Because affiliation can be automatic. The CAF writes this clearly in its frequently asked questions: “You do not have to do anything if you meet all the conditions. Caf automatically registers you and contributes to old age insurance for you.” As a result, some discover years later that quarters were indeed validated during their parental leave.
Note that the AVPF depends in particular on household resources and the assistance received. It can, for example, be granted to a parent who receives PreParE after a birth and who has reduced or stopped their professional activity. Other families may also be entitled to it via the family supplement, assistance reserved for parents of at least three children. In this case, household income must not exceed certain ceilings set by the CAF. In 2026, a couple with three children and a single salary must, for example, earn no more than 44,735 euros per year. The ceiling rises to 54,724 euros for a couple in which both parents work or for a single-parent family with three children. These amounts then increase for each additional child.
The system may also concern parents who care for a child with a disability or who is seriously ill. Receiving certain aid, such as the daily parental presence allowance (AJPP) or the education allowance for disabled children (AEEH), can make it possible to continue to validate retirement rights, even without exercising professional activity. It is precisely this mix of criteria that explains why so many people miss out on the system.
The CAF nevertheless advises you to regularly check your situation on the Retirement Insurance website, in order to avoid oversights or errors. If you actually notice an error or a missing element, it is possible to request regularization by providing several supporting documents, such as certificates of payment of family benefits or periods of parental leave.
