This year, the city of romance par excellence is implementing a new measure which may not please tourists. Between April and July 2024, an entry tax must be paid. Dates to know.
Strolling around the romantic city of Venice will now cost you a few euros. If you have chosen the top destination for lovers for your next vacation, you will have to pay to enter. The city’s Municipal Council took an unprecedented decision on September 5, 2023 to deal with overtourism: implementing a tax on certain days of the year, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., for tourists who want to visit the city. The City of the Doges is the only area concerned, there is no “right of access for those who go to one of the smallest islands in the lagoon”, specifies the city of Venice on the dedicated platform.
The price of this pass, which is currently experimental, is 5 euros per person per day. To be paid before your arrival on the island. And don’t even think about defrauding it, because once paid online on the cda.ve.it website, a QR code is assigned to each person. It is therefore essential upon your arrival at the time of checks. If you do not respect the rule, you risk being fined up to 300 euros.
In total, the tax will be applicable for 29 days a year, between April and July 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Here are the dates chosen by the Italian municipality for the experiment:
- From April 25 to 30, 2024;
- From May 1 to May 5, 2024;
- May 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26, 2024;
- June 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30, 2024;
- July 6, 7, 13 and 14, 2024.
These days were of course not chosen by chance. “This is a way of discouraging entry into the city on particularly busy days. and a way to live better in the city, both as a tourist and as a resident”, said Michele Zuin, a city councilor. Only tourists are affected by this measure. Residents and people born in Venice are exempt from this tax. If they are checked, they will just have to show identification. Exemption requests can also be granted if you meet certain conditions (student, worker, participant in a sporting event, etc.).
