The story of the typewriter
It was in 1714 that a first patent was filed in the United States for a dialing machine model. It was not until 1833 and the French Xavier Progin to see the keys appear on the machines. Each letter or symbol then corresponds to a striking bar activated by the lever keys. In 1870, the first typewriter was marketed and followed many developments: the possibility of typing in lowercase and not in uppercase, the visible paper allowing to follow the text and finally, the optimization of the keys. Indeed, to prevent the keys from getting tangled and blocking, the keyboard must have been adapted by language, according to the occurrence of the letters used. This is why, in French we use an Azerty keyboard and in English a QWERTY keyboard (previously Dhiatensor). In the 20th century, the typewriter (notably from the Remington brand) was democratized thanks to improvements (electric machine, corrector ribbon, electronic machine …) before the computer flies the show. In 2011, the last factory that made writing machines worldwide closed in Bombay. Since then, mecascriptophiles – typewriter collectors – have multiplied.
