Unavoidable of the 1950s and 1960s and absent since the 1970s, Formica in all its states surfed on the retro trend to return to our interiors. The Buffet in Formica is the vintage thing to hunt.

Summary

The story of the buffet

The ancestor of the buffet was a set composed of two medieval boxes superimposed and created at the beginning of the Middle Ages. The dishes and service objects were exhibited there during the banquets. He was often mobile. During the Renaissance, it was called Dressing or Dressing-Buffet. In the 17th century, the size of the buffets decreased so that they could enter the dwellings. At that time, it had more or less floors. From its appearance to the 19th century, it was more and more carved and it is one of the main furniture of the baroque trend. In the 20th century, it was completely renewed in new materials, such as Formica between 1950 and 1975 and adopted different forms. Since its beginnings, the buffet remains a cabinet for storage of dishes, cutlery and table linen. It is therefore particularly found in kitchens and dining rooms.

In a vintage, industrial, pastel or rockabilly spirit, the formica buffet, low or two bunk, has come back in recent years with the retro trends of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. He reminds us of the kitchens of our grandparents but also the sets of films such as Grease And pulp Fiction or series like Mad Men And That 70’s show. Today, it adapts to any interior of the countryside in the city. The Formica also harmonizes with all the other materials of steel wood and is perfect in a mix and match atmosphere.

Rose, yellow, blue or green, it changes classic furniture and full of originality. We always love it so much for its practical side, easy to maintain and which fear nothing. The buffet is originally a kind of dresser, it is still found today in the kitchen but it can also be used in decoration storage in the entrance. In one body, it is rather chosen with three doors and two bodies, The more doors, the more charming it has. Between the two bodies, baskets, vases or photos are placed to break its sometimes massive appearance. A real retro breath by itself, the buffet in Formica can be coupled with chairs or a table for a vintage decoration of the most beautiful effect.

Please note: when you chine old Formica furniture, they are sometimes covered with a formal melamine resin that breaks down over time (like some paintings). The latter then frees from the methanal, a kind of colorless and inflammable gas giving off a acrid smell in the air. Do not panic, it is just advised to ventilate your interior or buy plants with depolluting virtues. A little air and greenery, it doesn’t hurt!

What is the price of a vintage formica buffet?

Between 135 euros and 350 euros on Broc & Co, from 110 euros to 660 euros in Selency or from 40 euros to 1200 euros on Leboncoin.
