It is known for having published, in ten years, more than 200 so-called “casual” or “hypercasual” video games – those that you play in the subway, on your smartphone, to pass the time. But little by little, the French unicorn Voodoo is expanding more and more into the world of social networks. The start-up founded by Alexandre Yazdi and Laurent Ritter has just acquired BeReal, a French social network very popular with “Gen Z” and which has 40 million active users including the Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, and brands like PSG or Puma.
Founded in 2020 by two French people, BeReal is one of the rare French social networks to have made a breakthrough abroad, particularly in the United States (its first market) and Japan. It allows you to send, once a day and at a specific time, a photo taken at that moment to your friends. Without filters or “likes”, BeReal therefore positions itself as an anti-Instagram, with a promise of authenticity. Despite this audience success and high engagement rate, the application does not currently generate any income, having neither advertising nor subscription. After meteoric growth, the app is experiencing some stabilization.
