If you thought you could store everything in your attic, be aware that certain things stored there can hinder your compensation in the event of a disaster.

In a house or apartment, there are different places suitable for storage, such as the attic. You can get into the habit of storing a lot of things there, whether it’s boxes filled with dishes or clothes, Christmas decorations, souvenirs, tools or furniture that are no longer needed.

Attics are easily accessible places where we can easily store junk without thinking, however, most people are not aware that this practice can be risky and even expensive. Indeed, many think that storing a whole bunch of objects in the attic is without risk, but in the event of fire or collapse, all the contents of the home are scrutinized by the insurers.

And you should know that certain objects placed in the attic can be enough to block any compensation, despite good guarantees taken out. The attic is a space that is hot, dry and poorly ventilated, and is therefore more subject to the risk of fire, which is why certain products require very specific storage.

Flammable materials such as paint cans, solvents, gasoline or aerosol cans should not be stored in the attic as they constitute a major danger. But that’s not all, because electrical appliances, objects that are too heavy or archive documents can also be judged as risk aggravators by insurance experts because they can cause the floor to collapse.

The best thing to do to maintain your guarantees in the event of a disaster is to keep your attic clean and lightly loaded. Above all, do not store dangerous and flammable products, or electrical objects or appliances, which should be stored in appropriate places such as a garage, a garden shed or a cellar with ventilation. Also be sure to limit the loads in your attic, check the insulation regularly and ensure that they are easily accessible in the event of a problem.

By adopting these good practices, you will avoid a refusal of compensation in the event of a disaster and your attic will be perfectly secure so that you can sleep soundly!
