What we should never have taken with us

Sleeping in the desert is an experience to be absolutely in a relationship or as a family. Idyllic setting, atmosphere worthy of the thousand and one nights … Everything was perfect, until this beginner’s error.

Spread out of the city’s tumult for an authentic adventure in the heart of the golden dunes of the desert. This is the experience that we had the chance to test with the family, in the Dubai desert, in Sonara Camp. Whether you go as a couple or a family, you will necessarily create unforgettable memories. Indeed, as soon as the arrival is designed to make an impression. It all starts with a particularly warm welcome: the staff are very careful to accompany us in jeep in our accommodation, to wear our suitcases … The slightest effort is avoided here so as not to melt under the heat of the desert (in May, it already makes almost 43 degrees).

Once ready, we join the Sonara camp, where everything is happening: an aperitif and animations are offered: camel back ride to admire the sunset, tobogganing on the sand, archery and swing, then a gourmet dinner served under the starry sky, during which captivating shows followed by captivating shows (firefighter, acrobate) Artistic performances which add a touch of fairyland to this exceptional decor. We love it, and our two -year -old son is also amazed. The night continues in an atypical accommodation to say the least. Forget the traditional tents: here, we sleep in elegant luxury cocoons, dug in the sand, offering total immersion while guaranteeing absolute comfort.

But our experience was spiced up by an unexpected visit, and we did not close the eye of the night. It is not a fierce animal, a snake or scorpions, although the latter are present in the desert … But an army of hundreds of ants which were attracted by a simple banana that I had stupidly preserved in my changing bag (in case my child has a little hollow). Big mistake! Especially since all meals are understood, you need nothing to take with you. With my husband, we spent the night chasing this anthill, which gradually climbed on the bed while our son was sleeping peacefully. And that’s not all: these insects were also attracted to the humidity of the layer. There were lots in the trash … Result: a sleepless night to manage this surprise invasion! Despite this adventure, this experience at Sonara Camp remains one of our best memories!

To make your experience just as memorable (the ants less!), Here are some last practical tips. Remember to bring fogger, sunscreen, hats and glasses, but also closed shoes. The desert is a wild ecosystem and, even if we have met any, the presence of scorpions or snakes remains a possibility (we have never been so reassured to put on our sneakers). Finally, if the heat you worry, know that everything is perfectly suited. The rooms are air-conditioned and breakfast is taken in the shade of large tents equipped with fans. However, the temperature climbs very quickly. Our advice: Enjoy the morning freshness (breakfast takes place from 7 a.m.), and do not delay to stretch the desert from 8:30 am, because the sun quickly becomes intense.
