This Saturday March 21, 2026, take part in World Down Syndrome Day by taking on the mismatched socks challenge. This symbolic and playful gesture allows us to celebrate diversity.
In a nod to its name, Down syndrome is celebrated every year on March 21. In 2026, this world day falls on a Saturday. Down syndrome is not a disease, but a genetic abnormality characterized by the presence of a third chromosome on the 21st pair, which results in varying degrees of intellectual and physical disability. Contrary to popular belief, it does not concern 27,000 newborns per year in France (a figure which rather corresponds to an estimate of the total population at the time), but approximately 450 to 500 annual births. This year, the theme of the world day is “Together against loneliness”. The emphasis is on social inclusion to break the isolation of wearers, with the traditional invitation to wear mismatched socks on March 21 to celebrate diversity.
What is the mismatched sock challenge?
Imagined by the Down Syndrome International Association and popularized in France by the Trisomie 21 France Association, the challenge consisting of wearing on March 21 mismatched socks allows us to value diversity and difference. Because “all different, but all included, that’s normal right?“, proclaims Trisomy 21 France loud and clear. This symbolic challenge allows each of us, at our level, to be an actor in this mobilization and to participate in a more inclusive society. Concretely, on March 21, you must:
- Put mismatched socks (two colors or two different patterns)
- Take a photo of your feet
- Share it on social networks like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #Socksbattle4DS #MismatchedSocks
- Invite your friends and loved ones to do the same!
What is the origin of World Down Syndrome Day?
In December 2011the United Nations General Assembly decides to proclaim March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day. In a resolution adopted on December 19, 2011, it invites “all Member States, relevant agencies of the United Nations system and other international organizations, as well as civil society (including non-governmental organizations and the private sector) to properly observe the Day, in order to raise public awareness on this issue“. From 2012this syndrome is thus honored every year on the occasion of an Awareness Day orchestrated by the Down Syndrome International Association and widely followed by all the associations concerned, including Trisomie 21 France. “This campaign is linked to the Down Syndrome International campaign, because it’s a global topic : give ourselves the means to create a society which includes all the people who make it up, that is to say which excludes none. For this, it is essential to allow universal accessibility for all people with disabilities (school, leisure, work, public services, places of life and culture, etc.) to allow the people concerned to be able to take part like others“, announces Nathanaël Raballand, the President of Trisomie 21 France.
What are the actions for Down Syndrome Day?
Trisomie 21 France is organizing various actions throughout the month of March, in partnership with the Down Syndrome International association (DSI) and the European association supporting people with Down syndrome (Edsa). to raise awareness of inclusive society in order to encourage everyone to act. Among the key events that took place on this awareness day:
- This year, the federation is launching the campaign “So that difference no longer isolates”signed Caramba Communication.
The objective is to encourage everyone to mobilize to build a society that creates connections. - A call launched on social networks to encourage everyone to express in video what an inclusive society means to them and to financially support our actions.
- Workshop-debates and testimonials to imagine together a more inclusive society
- Numerous events organized by local associations and Trisomie 21 France services locally
