We are used to seeing the white or silver moon. But very soon, it will change color, during a total eclipse. This event occurs when the earth is positioned between the sun and the moon, preventing sunlight from reaching the surface of the moon. This celestial phenomenon is rare in France.
This is called “a blood moon”: instead of becoming completely black, the moon takes on a reddish shade. For what ? The terrestrial atmosphere diffuses the blue light from the sun, but lets the red and orange light pass. This red light continues to travel through the atmosphere and illuminates the moon, giving it this characteristic color. The shade can vary from the copper red to orange red, depending on the atmospheric conditions of the earth at the time of the eclipse, such as the presence of dust or volcanic ash.
According to the Paris Observatory, this blood moon will be visible throughout metropolitan France on Sunday, September 7, between 7:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. depending on the cities. Its maximum is scheduled at 8:11 p.m. and 48 seconds. It is in the eastern part of France (Nice, Strasbourg, Lyon …) and in Corsica that we can best benefit from this show, provided that the sky is clear. Unlike a solar eclipse that requires eye protections, you don’t need any special equipment. It is perfectly visible and safe with the naked eye.
Historically, the blood moon has fueled many myths and legends through cultures. Formerly perceived as an omen of chaos or a celestial battle, it is today often associated with themes of transformation and renewal. Its appearance is considered by some as a moment conducive to meditation and introspection, adding a spiritual dimension to observation.
