As the long holidays approaches, students benefiting from the APL must anticipate if they want to continue to perceive this aid during the summer.
More than 800,000 students receive housing assistance (APL), the amount of which generally oscillates between 100 and 150 euros. Help, paid by family allowances, essential for many young people for whom it is much more than a simple boost. To claim, students must meet several criteria, including resources, which must not exceed a certain ceiling. Only students who live in a university residence or private accommodation (not belonging to their parents and an area greater than 9 m²) can benefit from this allowance.
While many young people study far from their home and are therefore forced to rent accommodation near their university or school, the question arises of course to keep this accommodation during the summer or not. Some have several weeks of vacation and generally return to the family home, making their student room for the summer. As for those who rent an apartment with a student lease, the situation is a little different, because except against order, the lease in question ends at the end of June. But what is the approach to follow for young people who wish to continue to perceive the APL during the summer?
Good news, this is quite possible. But you have to respect a very specific calendar! Students beneficiaries of personalized housing assistance (APL) must imperatively specify their situation for the summer at their family allowance fund if they want to continue to reach this aid. If they keep their accommodation during the summer and continue to pay rent, they must report it to CAF before the end of July, otherwise the assistance will be suspended.
There is obviously another case: the student wishes to keep his accommodation at the start of the school year, but will not pay rent during the summer. The calendar is the same, he must report it to his CAF before the end of July to benefit from the help from the start of the school year when he reinstates the accommodation. Important information, to benefit from the APL, the student must occupy his accommodation for at least 8 months during a year!
Another possibility for students during the summer: sublet their accommodation, with the owner’s agreement. This solution allows them not to lose their lease while reducing the costs during the holidays. Please note, this sublet must be declared and not exceed the amount of the rent paid. On the other hand, it can have an impact on the right to APL: if the student receives rent from the sub-tenant, this can be taken into account in his resources and reduce the amount of aid, or even temporarily suspend it. It is therefore better to find out about your CAF before getting started.
