It can improve alertness and memory in just a few minutes.
The cold sets in, and with it fatigue, drops in concentration and that feeling of numb brain that prevents us from remaining efficient. Between work, screens and the lack of light, our memory, our attention and our vigilance are put to the test. What if a little natural remedy could help support our cognitive functions? A simple essential oil could have a surprising effect.
Thai researchers conducted a study of 30 healthy women, published in the “Thai Pharmaceutical and Health Science Journal”. Each participant inhaled a particular essential oil for five minutes, via a cotton pad placed under the nose, or an odorless placebo. Before and after inhalation, the scientists assessed memory, attention and mood using tests and self-assessment scales. Blood pressure and heart rate were also measured to check that the effect was not related to a traditional stimulant.
According to the authors of the study, “After inhalation, participants showed a significant improvement in continuity of attention and quality of memory, while their mood, in terms of alertness and calmness, also improved”. Participants exposed to this essential oil reported feeling more alert and calm. The famous oil? This is Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil.

It is a vasodilator, it increases the caliber of the vessels and improves blood circulation, particularly in the brain. It contains several major compounds, such as Z‑geranial (the famous citral), E‑geranial and myrcene, according to this 2023 study, which give it significant antioxidant activity which could also explain its observed effects on vigilance and memory.
