When spring arrives, we open the windows of the house without hesitation. But in March, this gesture which is part of our household routine is not always a good idea. There is a very specific reason why.

From the month of March, a reflex that we believe to be beneficial can become less adapted to the season. Opening the windows wide when you wake up to chase away winter humidity and freshen the air seems logical. However, at this pivotal time, this gesture can unbalance the atmosphere in the house without us realizing it. Behind this well-established routine lies an element that many forget and which can impact interior comfort faster than we think.

But why does ventilating your home become a problem in March when it is often said that it is the key to a healthy home? The answer lies in climate change. Nature now wakes up two to three weeks in advance, disrupting usual biological cycles. During the night, humidity and the absence of wind create a settling phenomenon: suspended particles are trapped near the surface, unable to be dispersed in the upper atmosphere.

Between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., the concentration of these irritants at eye level is 5 to 10 times higher than in the middle of the day. By opening your windows at this precise time, you are literally inviting a concentration of harmful particles to saturate your indoor air.

Rest assured, to prevent your house from becoming a pollen nest, since that’s what it is, simply shift the opening of your windows between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. At this time, the heat creates turbulence that disperses humidity and allergens high in altitude. Opening it for a few minutes at midday is enough to renew the air without risk. Another window is suitable: between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., before dew forms and when urban pollution decreases. For more details, consult the site atmo-france.org to follow the indices in your municipality.

Finally, using a HEPA air purifier can help the most sensitive to filter fine particles. By adopting these new time reflexes, you will have a peaceful spring, far from allergy attacks.
