Garou had a most surprising encounter while he was in Morocco. The 53-year-old singer recounted this mishap on M Radio…
As he sets out again on all the roads of France to defend his latest album, A better tomorrowreleased in May 2025, Garou came to visit Christophe Beaugrand on M Radio last March. The opportunity for the Quebec singer adored by the French to look back at length on his career, and behind the scenes of his very first, and immense, success, Beautiful.
Garou has “nearly died” in Morocco: “Something pretty crazy happened to me”
Remember, Garou was revealed in the musical Notre-Dame-de-Paris in which he brought Quasimodo to life. During his first time in Paris, the interpreter of Alone took the opportunity to head for Morocco, a destination much more accessible from Paris than from Montreal.
And it’s up to him to tell a completely improbable anecdote: he was bewitched! “The first time I came to Paris, I went straight to Morocco. And for a month I played in a bar. I had just done the models of Notre-Dame. I went there for a month to play in a bar, I came across a wizard because I almost died. Something pretty crazy happened to me”detailed the 53-year-old singer.
A wizard has “cast a spell” to Garou: what now?
And it’s up to him to continue, always in Welcome to Beaugrand : “And then apparently he cast a success spell on me, and a week/ten days later, I came back to Paris to record my first ever song, which was called ‘Belle’. So I think his spell was pretty good.”. It must be said that Beautiful– title taken from the musical Notre-Dame-de-Paris-, is the best-selling single of the 1990s, and the third best-selling single of all time in France. No less than 2,500,000 copies have been sold!
France, and perhaps Morocco if we believe in witchcraft, have therefore opened the field of possibilities to Garou. However, the father of Émelie, the daughter he had with the Swedish model Ulrika in 2001, remains very attached to his Quebec, and more particularly to his hometown, Sherbrooke. “A month and a half without coming home is still a long way off. I missed winter, I missed my maple syrup which I couldn’t make this year…”he confided to Christophe Beaugrand.
