Marie Myriam won Eurovision almost 50 years ago. But did the singer earn a lot of money from her song “The Bird and the Child”?
It’s already been almost 50 years since Marie Myriam made history by winning Eurovision for France with her song The bird and the child. But had the singer won a good sum of money after her victory in the international competition?
Marie Myriam, the money she won after Eurovision: “We sold…”
The young Monroe represents the colors of France for this new edition of Eurovision, the grand final of which takes place on May 16, but the last time that France rose to the top of the ranking dates back to 1977. Marie Myriam, now aged 69, won this international competition and her life was never the same after this spotlight. But did the Franco-Portuguese woman receive significant sums of money after her triumph? “I made a good living“, she said to Jordan De Luxe, in her show At Jordan’s.
However, the interpreter of The bird and the child did not give an exact figure and made it clear that she had not received a large sum of money immediately. She received a percentage of record sales: “We sold 4 million 45s over several years. But I had a small percentage because I was an emerging artist, I didn’t have 12 or 7% but rather 2%“, she qualified.
Marie Myriam, disappointed by the amount of her retirement
Despite the few prosperous years she has experienced, Marie Myriam does not receive a particularly substantial pension today. It must be said that the three years during which she amassed the most money, from 1977 to 1979, were not taken into account in the calculation of her pension.
“I don’t know why, I didn’t have my full Social Security number. So it couldn’t be recorded. My fees were paid, but they were never counted towards my retirement“, she explained to Jordan De Luxe, before tempering: “But I can’t complain, I have 1,200 euros“.
Today, Marie Myriam carefully follows the Eurovision contest and tries to support the French candidates each year. the young candidate Monroe, who will try to win against the favorites of this edition, has recently assured TV Magazine : “I met Marie Myriam, the last winner for France, who is very kind and encouraging“.
