Disappointment but not really a surprise for France at Eurovision: the young French candidate, Monroe, finished 11th in the competition. Relatively acclaimed by the national juries, it was shunned by viewers. She expresses herself.
At the age of 17, Franco-American singer Monroe placed 11th in the 70th edition of the Eurovision contest, organized in Vienna, Austria. The young candidate, who defended our colors on the stage of the Wiener Stadthalle with the song Look at, was largely shunned by public votes. She reacted to this setback with the newspaper The Parisian.
Monroe ranked 11th at Eurovision: “It was the public who caused the French candidate to collapse”
Once again, France lost; and Marie Myriam continues to remain the ultimate French winner of the Eurovision contest. Monroe, whose popularity among punters had only dropped as the final approached, therefore obtained an honorable 11th place out of 25. A score that she owes mainly to the votes of the national juries. With 114 points from them, she was then ranked 4th. But the televoting, on the part of the viewers, was very, very harsh with her… “It was the public that brought down the French candidate, with fourteen small points awarded in 34 countries. Eighteenth of the public out of thirty-five…”specifies THE Parisian. She therefore finished with a total score of only 158 points.
An analysis shared by Stéphane Bern, who commented this year on the evening with Camille Cerf. “What I note is that the jury placed Monroe very well. She had 12 points several times and all the countries gave her points. The song is validated”he said. And for him to add: “Now, the public vote is something else. The European public did not necessarily agree (…) Perhaps something more accessible like the Bulgarian song was needed.”
Some voices are already being raised to encourage France Télévisions – Monroe’s performance was followed by 5.8 million viewers on France 2, the peak of the evening for the channel – to completely change the team of the French delegation, the same for years…
Monroe “satisfied” : his reaction to the low public vote
To the newspaper, Monroe agreed to react directly to his 11th place and the few points from viewers. Disappointed? “No, it’s okay. I’m happy with what we shared. We felt good, we were there with the public. We had a message that we love so much… And when you like your message, you’re already happy to have just shared it“, she assured backstage at the Wiener Stadthalle. Monroe was also delighted to finally be able to go eat McDonald’s with her team, even though she had been going without it for weeks!
Next year, Eurovision should therefore take place in Bulgaria – for the very first time – following the victory of singer Dara with her song Bangaranga facing the Israeli candidate, Noam Bettan, who was widely booed by the audience when the viewers’ points were awarded.
