What is the origin of Father’s Day?
There father’s day has existed since the Middle Ages, where it was celebrated on March 19, St. Joseph’s Day. It was thus a Christian holiday dedicated to the father of Jesus. We had to wait 1952 so that it becomes a non-religious holiday in Francenow established on the third Sunday in June. And the latter was only instituted twelve years after Mother’s Day! It’s a French manufacturer of lighters (Flaminaire brand) which was the initiator taking inspiration from the United States where this “commercial” celebration had already existed since 1910. The advertising slogan of the time then proclaimed: “Our dads told us, for Father’s Day, they all want a Flaminaire“. Because yes, during this first half of the 20the century, it was well accepted to offer one’s father gifts linked to tobacco consumption: cigarette carton, pipe or even lighter… Two years later, this celebration was made official by the public authorities who fixed it on the third Sunday of the month of June.
