Leo XIV has been serving as pope for a year now. If he is a guide for millions of Catholics around the world, he also remains the one his family calls as soon as the computer breaks down…

Elected on May 8, 2025, Leo XIV is the 267th pope of the Catholic Church. Despite his taking office, those close to him seem to have difficulty understanding that he can no longer do what he did before… This was recently reported by the New York Times in an article from June 9, who collected the confidences of Armando Jesús Lovera, one of the oldest friends of the sovereign pontiff.

Leo XIV still requested by his family in the United States

The daily reports an anecdote related by Armando Jesús Lovera who explains that during a recent conversation with Leo XIV, the pope told him that he had received a phone call from his brother John Prevost, from Chicago, for a technical problem! “And Roberto (the nickname of the pope, whose real name is Robert Francis Prevost, editor’s note) said to him: ‘John, I am the Pope!‘”, he said. Not enough to impress the brother of the head of the Vatican, who retorted: “Oh, sorry, Pope. Well my computer is broken.“But history does not say whether Leo XIV was able to resolve his problem remotely…

The 70-year-old sovereign, the first pope from the order of Saint Augustine, however likes to keep in touch with those around him so as not to remain locked in the Vatican bubble. So, he regularly calls his friend Armando Jesús Lovera and they talk about everything except the Church. Their favorite topic of discussion? The cars!

Leo XIV, a pope in tune with technology?

Leo On the other hand, the head of the Catholic Church was very critical of Artificial Intelligence (AI). “Artificial intelligence must be disarmed“, he recently confided, according to Vatican News.

Not totally opposed to AI, the pope who is expected for three days in France from September 25 to 28, 2026, however advocated that it be “freed from the logic that makes it an instrument of domination, exclusion or death“, adding that when technology “weakens our critical thinking, peace itself is threatened.”
