Difficult to fall asleep when it’s hot? This ultra-fast method, validated by this emergency doctor, promises to fall asleep peacefully, even in the middle of a heatwave.

During extreme heat, getting to sleep can quickly become an obstacle course. Above 25°C in a room, our body temperature struggles to drop, which blocks the falling asleep phase and leads to restless nights. Faced with this problem which affects millions of French people with each heat wave, classic solutions such as the fan which circulates hot air quickly show their limits. Fortunately, an emergency doctor has shared an unstoppable method for regaining peaceful and restorative nights.

This doctor is Dr. Jonny Betteridge. With his experience in emergency and intensive care, he explains that in a hospital environment, medical teams must regularly cool patients in absolute emergency. It was by adapting this medical technique to our daily lives that he found the ultimate trick to reproduce at home. Dr. Betteridge confides that he used this method in particular “for patients who arrived at the hospital with very high temperatures, between 40 and 43 degrees, whether due to heatstroke, a drug reaction or a serious infection“.

The tip cited by the Express UK is simple: just take two small blocks of ice (like those for coolers) or bags of frozen gel, wrap them in a thin cloth, a cloth, a towel or a t-shirt (sports for example), and place them directly under your armpits when going to bed. The neck and groin are also strategic areas. “Believe me, the cooling effect is really excellent“, he assures. To maximize the effect, the doctor advises lying on your side with the ice block under your arm, all combined with the blowing of a fan.

The reason this trick works so well is simply a matter of anatomy. The armpits are home to large superficial blood vessels. By applying cold to this specific location, we directly cool the blood which circulates throughout the body. This mechanism allows the overall internal temperature to quickly drop, which sends an immediate sleep signal to the brain.

This completely free, ultra-fast and scientifically validated method promises to fall asleep peacefully, even in the middle of a heatwave. Just remember to always surround the ice with a cloth to protect your skin, and you on cool nights.
