When it’s 35°C or more, we try everything to stay cooler. And, against all expectations, a Korean treatment promises to lower the skin’s temperature. We tried it to see if this promise really holds up and here is our verdict.

During heatwaves, we immediately think of the fan, the bottle of iced water or the mister to cool down. However, certain treatments, inspired by cryotherapy, also promise to calm feelings of heat, restore some comfort to the skin and even lower its temperature. On paper, it’s tempting. It remained to be seen whether, in real life, the difference is really felt.

Indeed, the heat puts a strain on the skin. It can feel tight, red, become more sensitive or give that unpleasant feeling of having your face heat up all day long. And the back and forth between sun-drenched streets and air-conditioned offices doesn’t help anything. Add to that UV rays and pollution, and the skin sometimes ends up asking for a little respite.

A Korean treatment has been developed to address this problem. Its formula hydrates while helping the skin regain its balance. The idea is to strengthen the skin barrier, this natural protection which prevents the epidermis from losing too much water and which defends it against daily aggressions. When this barrier weakens, the skin often becomes drier, more reactive and more uncomfortable. This is exactly what many people see during hot weather.

The product in question is the Aestura Atobarrier365 Hydro Soothing Cream, sold for 32 euros for 100 ml at Sephora. This cream guarantees a refreshing effect upon application and its formula has been designed for sensitive skin. In terms of composition, we find a complex of lipids which imitates those already present naturally in the skin. The formula also contains trehalose, an active ingredient of natural origin known to help the skin maintain its hydration, even when the air is particularly dry. Finally, the brand uses a technology called BMF, which is responsible for this feeling of freshness which occurs almost immediately after application. All in a light gel-cream texture, which penetrates quickly.

So we tested it during a particularly hot day. First good point: as soon as you apply it, the face really seems fresher. It’s not just a feeling that disappears in three seconds. The brand claims its formula can lower skin temperature by up to 5.5°C. For our part, it is impossible to verify this figure without measuring equipment, but the refreshing effect is there. We feel that the skin heats up less and quickly regains a little comfort. The texture is pleasant, does not stick and does not leave that greasy film which quickly becomes unbearable when it is very hot.

On the other hand, it’s better to be clear: you shouldn’t expect to have the air conditioning on your face all afternoon. The freshness effect is above all immediate. Then, hydration takes over and helps the skin better tolerate heat. All you have to do is form your own opinion.
