They are one of the essentials in a home worthy of the name. Problem, the first prices are really not good. Luckily, this decorator has an inexpensive solution.
In a house or apartment, there are things that you cannot do without and this is the case with switches. There are them in every room and they are at eye level, clearly visible. If the white classics are nothing transcendent, there are all kinds and even very pretty ones. The problem is that they are often much more expensive. When you commit to a renovation, it’s the kind of additional expense that you could have done without.
So, what to do? Should we resign ourselves and keep our ugly, but very cheap, switches? The queen of DIY and upcycling, Amélia Lopez Decimavilla, dreamed of black switches in her home, but they “represented a fairly significant extra, and we didn’t have the budget to put them everywhere in the house. So, we opted for white switches upstairs, telling ourselves that we would change them later”she explains on her Instagram account.
While keeping this in the back of her mind, she decided to try a great idea that guarantees “black switches at low prices”. She had spotted a solution making the rounds on social media, but she was a little skeptical. So she tried and… “three years later, I can give you real feedback: they are still perfect, even though they are used every day! It’s simple, quick, and the result is really great”.
This brilliant idea is to simply spray paint them and it holds up really well. “For cleaning, a wipe with a damp sponge is enough, and if certain areas become a little damaged over time, just add a little paint”she assures.
And here is the method she used. She dismantled all the switches, cleaned them well then degreased them before applying a coat of primer so that the paint would stick well. Then, she sprayed them black, letting it dry well between each coat of spray. When it was dry, she applied a transparent matte protective spray and that was it.
