For the first time in 157 years, a solar eclipse of exceptional intensity will plunge France into unreal darkness for more than 2 minutes.
This is the event that all astronomy enthusiasts and curious people have checked off their calendars for years. In a short time, a total solar eclipse will cross part of Europe and will be visible in France. This spectacular phenomenon occurs when the Moon passes exactly between the Earth and the Sun, completely obscuring our star to plunge part of the planet into artificial night in broad daylight. Although France has already experienced partial eclipses, it has been 157 years (since 1869) since a phenomenon of this magnitude was observed with such intensity.
After the Blood Moon, we can observe the solar disk gradually transforming into a thin golden crescent until darkness becomes almost complete. Warning: it is extremely dangerous to watch the eclipse with the naked eye, even if the Sun is 99% hidden. This can cause irreversible burns to the retina without feeling pain. To benefit from this, the use of special eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2 standard) is mandatory. If you have binoculars or a telescope, never use them without certified solar filters placed on the front of the instrument, otherwise you risk losing your vision instantly. Classic sunglasses, even very high quality ones, are completely ineffective in protecting your eyes during an eclipse.
The date of this great eclipse is set for Wednesday August 12, 2026, at the end of the day. The eclipse will be visible everywhere in France, but the darkness will be more intense in the southwest. In Biarritz, the Sun will be 99.5% hidden around 8:26 p.m., while in Paris, it will be around 92% hidden at 8:23 p.m. The moment of maximum darkness will last approximately 2 to 3 minutes.
As the Sun will be low on the horizon at this time, the spectacle promises unreal twilight colors, provided you have a clear view to the west. With its configuration and unique luminosity, it will surely be among the most beautiful eclipses of the decade. This show is not only visual, it is also audio. During these few minutes of darkness, you might observe a strange phenomenon: the birds suddenly stop singing and the farm animals return to their shelters, convinced that night has fallen. This is what scientists call the “eclipse silence”, a moment of absolute calm where nature seems to hold its breath.
If you miss this appointment, know that another total eclipse is planned for the following year, on August 2, 2027, but it will be especially visible in the south of Spain and in North Africa. For France, the next truly total eclipse crossing France will not take place until 2081. Suffice to say that the August spectacle is an often unique opportunity in a lifetime to feel the great thrill of the “Black Sun”.
